Archie Comics #1 Brings Big Bucks

Posted on March 03, 2011 at 3:12 PM Comic Book Value

At a recent Heritage Auctions Vintage Comics & Comics Art Auction a high grade Archie Comics #1 sold for $167,300, the highest ever for a non-superhero based comic. This sale was surprising for most in the industry and it is likely going to lead the way for other non-superhero comics to bring in larger sums at auction. Superhero comics have long been the most profitable at auction and the sum that Archie brought in is still far behind some of the superhero titles, however, this sale shows that the market is beginning to change its tastes a bit.

The auction as a whole brought in $4,270,483 and had a 99.6% total sell-through rate, which is at a nearly unprecedented level for an auction of this type. With numbers like that, as well as good early numbers at the annual Armory Show (an art show in NYC), it appears as though sales in the art world may be on the rebound. However, it will be interesting to see if the rise in art/comic art sales has a positive impact on brick and mortar comic book shops or if they will continue to decline.
