Amazing Fantasy No. 15 Sells for $1.1 Million

Posted on March 09, 2011 at 9:31 AM Comic Book Value

On Monday, a private seller sold a private buyer a near-mint issue of "Amazing Fantasy" No. 15, which is the debut of Spider-Man, for $1.1 million. "Amazing Fantasy" No. 15 was first published in 1962 and although $1.1 million is not the most ever paid for a comic book, it is the most paid for a Silver Age comic (mid-1950s - 1970).

This issue of "Amazing Fantasy" has long been sought after due to the debut of Spider-Man, which is significant because Spider-Man is now such an important part of the Marvel universe. The cover of the issue was drawn by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and is an important comic book for collectors.

This sale is also impressive because the thought that a book that is so (relatively) new can go for more than a million dollars is unheard of. Until now comic books from the Golden Age (1930s - early 1950s) were considered the most valuable and now we are seeing that collector's are paying higher and higher prices for newer books.
