'Chew' Being Adapted To Television

Posted on March 25, 2011 at 9:06 AM Comic Book News

This hit comic book series "Chew", produced by Image Comics, is potentially coming to the small screen. The television rights to the Eisner Award-winning comic book written by John Layman with art by Rob Guillory has been picked up by Showtime for pilot production.

The comic book series follows FDA agent Tony Chu and the interesting way in which he solves some of the most mysterious food-related crimes.  Agent Chu has psychic visions when he eats any type of food, including human flesh and other unsavory items. These psychic visions usually lead to breaks in high profile food cases in a world where chicken and other birds are considered contraband after a bird-flu epidemic.

The series is one of the most original out there and Showtime is the perfect network for the television adaptation since they have such a lack of restrictions compared to other networks. The pilot script was written by Terri Hughes Burton and Ron Milbauer and several people have already signed on to produce the show, however no casting announcements have been made yet. If the show makes it to series it will likely debut in the 2012-13 season.

It's likely that the success of "The Walking Dead" on AMC, at least in part, led to Showtime's decision to pick up "Chew". With the possiblity of "The Walking Dead", "Chew", and "Powers" (a Brian Michael Bendis adaptation) being on air all at the same time, which show do you think will see the most success?
