C2E2 2011

Posted on April 13, 2011 at 8:51 AM Comic Book Conventions

I can not easily describe in words my weekend exhibiting in Chicago at C2E2!

It is an experience that I fully recommend to every comic book fan and creator alike. You can't imagine the multitude of fans, great artists and original art, and fantastic cosplayers that made this event such a great success.

Reed Pop puts on a fantastic show, enjoyable by creator and fan. They assured us we were completely taken care of with anything we needed, making us feel pretty much like rock stars.

I have always exhibited with Patrick Goodwin, we have a great time and our experience at C2E2 ensured our presence in August at Wizard World of Chicago. I am sure they will follow suit with the practices of Reed Pop and duplicate the power of this convention.

Approximately 34,000 people showed up to this event and the tremendous amount of art and creative people was completely mind blowing. Our table was a non-stop flow of traffic that hardly allowed us time to interact with other artists who were just as busy. I have many friends at C2E2 who I managed to see for the duration of scattered minutes available to me while making a few attempts to wander through artist alley focusing on familiar faces.

Picking up nothing for myself as far as sketches, commissions, or autographs but I stayed just as busy at my own table working on artwork for fans! This commission workload actually carried over to late nights drawing between scheduled face-time in fear of not being able to complete my obligations to my fans! Through past conventions I have found myself working on random sketching, drawings or inking practice filling idle time and eventually making my way through artist alley at least twice.

The experience was incredible and being able to interact with the fans and do as many commissions as I did was nothing short of fantastic. Reed Pop created a very easy and user-friendly way to contact their favorite artists via mobile apps and artists’ profiles. My fans were able to locate me and some even contacted me prior to the event with their C2E2 planner to help them schedule their day. The Reed Pop app definitely helped me plan out my work list and keep in contact with people who had prepaid for commissions and sketches via these methods.

There were many scouts, publishing companies, creator groups and people seeking out artists at this event. I was approached by a handful of people with interest in my work and have already followed up with several wonderful opportunities. I have received correspondence from the company publishing a book that my artwork has been selected to appear to negotiated price and publishing terms. There are two other opportunities that I will continue to follow through and hopefully find as much success.

I also made a lot of new friends and met many new faces, opened many doors, and I am genuinely excited to continue building relations with these fans and creators alike. I would not have had the opportunity to meet or interact with had C2E2 not been put together so exceptionally.

I will be posting updates and links and future schedules as well as commissions and original artwork on my website necrollusions.com.

I have already received word from Reed Pop about next years show and will definitely save the date! There’s no way I am missing an opportunity such as this event and if I can only make one convention per year, C2E2 by far takes the lead.

See you there!

Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 7:58 PM Thanks.  I have been to quite a few conventions but yes it can intimidate you but you do need to realize these people are there to see you and watch you draw.  So you just do what you know how to do.  I usually just sit and draw or sketch and people come up and start talking while I am already focused.  Not much different than sitting and drawing in any random coffee shop and people walking up and talking about what you are doing.

If you get a chance Dennis you really should attend as an exhibitor.  Even if it is a small show, get out there and do what you do!  I actually have a lot of fun meeting the people and answering questions to aspiring artists and fans.

And yes, I do have a fear of talking in front of people! But not so much when I am drawing. ;) Reply
