Spider-Man the Musical Going on Hiatus

Posted on April 19, 2011 at 9:42 AM Comic Book News

The much criticized Broadway musical extravaganza known as Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark is going on a three week hiatus as the show gets a technical retooling. Though the show has been popular in ticket sales, the longevity of the musical’s appeal has been called in to question after abysmal reviews.

Though I haven’t seen it, from what I’ve read the story doesn’t seem to appeal much to comic books fans, as it departs wildly from the source material. Comic book fans are not known for their love of musicals, but I think they would still be thrilled about a good story well told involving a classic superhero. The musical’s special effects are indeed groundbreaking, but they are also dangerous. The show has been plagued with numerous accidents since its rehearsals and opening, which could also account for the consistently sold out shows. I guess you can never underestimate the human curiosity to see something to go wrong.

Hopefully, the new story and songs (by Bono and the Edge) will make the show worthwhile and entertaining, keeping Spider-Man on Broadway for a long time to come. The show is currently set to return on June 14th at the Foxwoods Theatre in New York City.
