Ultimate Spider-Man # 160 is hitting the shelves today (June 22nd), and so ends one of the most beloved heroes in the Marvel Ultimate Universe. Spider-Man is dead. No need for a spoiler alert, as this has been heavily advertised by Marvel to try and get the word out to the casual market, including talking to media such as USA Today and the Associated Press. They are hoping that the death of a major character will help fill in some of the summer sales slump they’ve been seeing.
Fans familiar with Marvel will certainly recognize the writer, Brian Michael Bendis, who penned the final Ultimate Spider-Man. He and Mark Millar are responsible for the Ultimate Universe which debuted back in 2000.
About writing this issue, Bendis told the Associated Press, "I won't lie to you, it's embarrassing to say this out loud. Tears were rolling down my face, I was very emotional in writing it. This is a character that I have stayed with the entire time, that I have been almost solely responsible for. It represents such a great deal of my life."
There is no doubt that this version of Spider-Man is one of the most popular in history, with healthy sales number through its entire run, and though we have yet to see how this will play out with fans, this will certainly be a memorable moment for those who have followed Spidey these past ten years.
For those already mourning, don’t worry, because Marvel will be relaunching the Ultimate Universe once again. August will bring many brand new titles and ongoing storylines, which will include, of course, Spider-Man.
