We’ve known about the X-Men: Schism for awhile now since it was announced at Wondercon earlier this year, but now the release date is rapidly approaching, and we’re still wondering what this is all about. Marvel has been leading up to the five part event series in its current Uncanny X-Men series (which will be stopped for this event, who knows if it will come back) but still hasn’t really thrown us many more hints, other than it is considered “Marvel’s next big thing.”
What we do know for sure is that it is a “Civil War” like event—a schism, if you will—that divides Cyclops and Wolverine up into opposing sides, making opposing teams with other X-Men having to choose who to follow. The intent is to create a moral dichotomy that will change the X-Men and even Marvel universe forever. It’s no surprise that Cyclops and Wolverine are the main characters of this new series and the leaders of the new teams, as they’ve been at odds with each other for decades. I’m guessing that this will be very much like how Captain America and Iron Man both represented opposite sides of the identity issue in Civil War. About the impact of this event, Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said, "All these status quo changes and hierarchical changes will have a very big impact on the Marvel U.”
I’m really excited to read this series, as it sounds like something monumental for the X-Men. While it’s hard to believe that Uncanny won’t be coming back, the prospect of multiple teams is an exciting one. We’ll all have to wait and see until July 13 when X-Men: Schism #1 hits store shelves.
