In 1987, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli created one of the most acclaimed Batman story arcs of all time—Batman: Year One. Warner Bros. and DC have teamed up again for a straight to DVD (and Blu-Ray) animated rendition of that classic graphic novel. The trailer has shown up on MTV, and the first glimpse looks great. The art style and tone seem to be in the spirit of the original, and the PG-13 rating seems to elevate it out of the typical Cartoon Network prime-time fare that we’re used to seeing from WB / DC.
The film is directed by Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery, who both have many DC animated films under their belt already. The cast is definitely looking sharp as well, with such notables as Eliza Dushku as Catwoman, Bryan Cranston as Jim Gordon, and Ben McKenzie as Batman.
Warner Bros’ Animation also released info on a 15 minute Catwoman short that will accompany the film. The short was written by Paul Dini and directed by Lauren Montgomery. Batman: Year One and the included Catwoman animated short will hit store shelves on Oct. 18.
