Comic Con News Keep A-Coming

Posted on July 27, 2011 at 11:32 AM Comic Book Conventions | Comic Book News

While the San Diego convention center currently dismantles and cleanses its newly acquired layers of sweat, tears, and unmentionable geek leftovers, so much happened at the Con that we’re still catching up with the most interesting news to come out of the hallowed halls.

If you were one of the lucky many to go to the Con, you’re probably just waking up (three days later) after getting some much needed rest. We hope you had fun, and we here at ComicBooks.com are going to help you process all the information you consumed over that long and frenzied weekend.

Jim Lee’s X-Men #1 Rises Again

Jim Lee’s X-Men #1 from 1991, which happens to be the best selling comic book of all time with approximately 8 million copies sold, is getting rereleased. Instead of releasing a facsimile for no real reason, Marvel is actually re-coloring the book to help it appeal to the modern comic aesthetic. Gone are the neon bright hues of the early nineties, replaced with much more modern, toned down colors.

This is the comic book of my youth, the very thing that got my little mind racing on everything mutants. I’m happy this happening, if only for the fresh breath of nostalgia.

Cyclops Bites the Dust?

We’ve done some reports all about the Marvel event called X-Men: Schism, and still more news keeps pouring out about this highly intriguing new arc. Rumors began swirling at Comic-Con about the lack of Cyclops in the various imagery being showcased and discussed at the X-Men panel. Cyclops was nowhere to be found. Marvel Editor-in-Chief Alex Alonso discussed the idea that Cyclops might not be around when the X-Men finally split apart. While it would seem a natural assumption to believe the Civil-War like storyline would pit Wolverine against Cyclops, as both carry such opposite ethos, but now it seems Cyclops might not even make it out of the “Schism” alive.

 Amazing Spider-Man is Amazing

After the footage and talks that came out about the Spider-Man reboot, I have to say that I’m really excited for this film. When I first heard they were going to start over with a new Spider-Man franchise, I couldn’t imagine how they could top Peter Parker as portrayed by Toby Maguire and interpreted by Sam Raimi, but no I’m not so sure. The tone is much different than those films, and I love Andrew Garfield as Parker. He brings a dramatic, yet realistic naivety to the character that is both vulnerable and endearing. I’m also ecstatic that they went with mechanical web shooters! Something that always bothered me about the Raimi versions (if Spider-Man had gained web shooting abilities via mutation, he certainly wouldn’t be shooting it out of his wrists…) and I wasn’t alone, because that was a vocal complaint from fanboys everywhere. July 3 2012 can’t come soon enough.

Avenging Spider-Man is Avenging

The upcoming series Avenging Spider-Man had some new art release during the Con, and it looks gorgeous! They released some pages of Spidey teaming up with Red Hulk. This looks to be a fun series, along with the clever and slightly hilarious Spider Island arc coming, I’m ready to get back into the swing of Spider-Man comics.

The Dark Knight Returns to be Animated

DC and WB announced that they are going to continue with releasing ground-breaking, fan favorite graphic novels like Batman: Year One and now The Dark Knight Returns as animated, straight-to-DVD features. The Frank Miller epic is next to get the animated treatment, and fans were excited at the notion as Bruce Timm, executive producer and artist announced the project after the screening of Batman: Year One.

Hopefully, this will keep the tone of the original book and continues to try to appeal to adults. I love this decision, and hopefully the rumored Kingdom Come film gets some production legs.

That’s it for now. While Comic-Con International 2011 may be over and done with, stick with us here at ComicBooks.com to hear all of the latest comic news and opinions, and get in on the conversation by leaving a comment below.
