DC has released a new commercial trailer that will be debuting on TV and in theaters across the country. This cements the reason for this controversial decision by showing that DC is after all those dormant comic book fans who haven’t picked up a book in a decade.

The trailer is short but intense, includes a dramatic rock ditty, and shows plenty of spinning #1 covers coming right at you. Honestly, I can’t understand why DC didn’t just put a voice over on this thing explaining what “The New 52” means to someone who is completely out of the loop of the comic book universe. Besides being a pleasant rhyme, “The New 52” doesn’t communicate what it is or why someone who either hasn’t cared in a long time or hasn’t ever cared should take notice now. They go on to show that the titles are new #1’s, but I’m not sure that will do the trick. I suppose we’ll see when DC releases their sales for this relaunch, but if you’re going to aggressively market something to a new demographic (because the old demo will buy these without a commercial), I have a feeling that it will take more than a pseudo motion comic to really get them interested.
Personally, I’m still looking forward to all of these titles as a fan and a fan of satisfying curiosity, but I’m cautious of the hype.
