According to The Hollywood Reporter, academy award winning screenwriter William Monahan has been brought in to clean up the script of the long-in-development Sin City 2. Robert Rodriguez (with Frank Miller as co-director) helmed Sin City back in 2005, successfully bringing Miller’s revolutionary style to the silver screen. The film went on to be a hit worldwide and a sequel has always been planned. Rodriguez has been busy developing other films, though he has always claimed that Sin City 2 was in development. Now it looks like the Sin City sequel is finally on the fast track with Monahan reportedly “supplementing a draft completed recently by Miller.”
There have always been rumors that the main thread of the film would be the “A Dame to Kill For” story from the graphic novels with Angelina Jolie supposedly attached as Ava. If this is not the case any longer, perhaps there is a concern that there wouldn’t be enough returning characters to connect it to the previous film. It’s hard to imagine a Sin City film without Mickey Rourke as Marv, or Jessica Alba as Nancy. Having loved The Departed, which is also an adapted work, I’m cautiously optimistic now that Monahan is on board. Let’s just hope he is able to resurrect this project up from development hell and hope that Robert Rodriguez doesn’t get distracted by another Spy Kids movie.
