Walking Dead Season 2 Lurches Near

Posted on September 29, 2011 at 9:08 AM

The second season of The Walking Dead is set to air on October 16 with a 90 minute premiere episode, and AMC has released a new teaser. Check it out here.

AMC had a lot of drama surrounding this show (and its other shows) this past summer with the ousting of showrunner Frank Darabont. Darabont, who was a key champion of the series, was given the boot when AMC found that he was too demanding and was having difficulty adjusting to the budget cuts the show had received for season 2. AMC had earlier made a deal with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner reportedly getting $10 million per season for up to and including three more seasons of the hit show. Because of this deal, AMC had to adjust budgets on all its other shows, including The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad (which was narrowly sold to FX for its final season).

While AMC was able to keep all of their shows from fleeing to another network, the loss of Darabont is a major blow as he was always portrayed as the creative force behind the show, which turned out to be a massive, if not unexpected success.

We’ll see in the months ahead if The Walking Dead still connects with that coveted 18-49 demographic and wasn’t just a flash in the pan. But without Darabont, this show could lose its direction and become a sad casualty of AMC’s growing pains.
