The trailer for next summer’s The Avengers has hit, and fan reaction seems to be positive to entirely enthusiastic. Let’s look at what we have:
Massive public explosions? Check.
Superheroes throwing each other through walls and windows? Check.
Tony Stark being snarky? Check.
I can’t say that any of it was a surprise, other than how natural everyone looks together. So far, we’ve never seen any of these characters interacting with another superhero, yet the universe cohesion is intact, even when you have all these one-time headliners taking on supporting roles to the overall cast of The Avengers. Marvel planned this masterfully, assuming that The Avengers works and turns out to be great. There’s only one problem that continues to persist, even after this trailer. Who is the villain?
Marvel hasn’t officially announced who the villain might be, though they show Loki in the trailer. It’s obvious that they want you to think that it is Loki, but the proximity to this year’s Thor makes that seem like a stretch, as any “wow” factor would have been spent already. If the threat to Earth requires the assembly of The Avengers, it has to be a gargantuan villain, capable of unbelievable destruction, and that’s not the sense I’m getting from Loki. He is a mastermind, somebody who employs muscle to do his work. So that begs the question, who is the muscle? Early on in the trailer we see the police shooting at something that would be very tall, many stories high, but we’re not shown what they’re seeing. The rumor has always been that the Skrulls would be the villains, but we’ve been shown no evidence of that, yet.

Right now, they want us to think that the villain is Loki. What if it IS just Loki? What do you think? Who should be the one to take on the Avengers?
