Tin Tin is Coming!

Posted on October 21, 2011 at 8:41 AM Comic Book Movies

The Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson collaboration, The Adventures of Tin Tin: The Secret of the Unicorn has been out for over a week in Europe and positive reviews promise for an adventure that Americans should be excited about. American audiences will have to wait until December 23rd to enjoy the movie in theatres, but if there’s any comic book movie you should be excited about, it’s The Adventures of Tin Tin.

Don’t feel bad if you aren’t familiar with Tin Tin—the original Adventures of Tin Tin comics were created by a Belgian artist who used the pen name Hergé and pioneered the ligne claire art style, not common in U.S. comics. Everyone in the U.S. knows of Where’s Waldo, which also uses the ligne claire style, but few know of the magnificence that is The Adventures of Tin Tin.

The comic even spurred an animated series that gained high popularity in Europe and eventually ran on Nickelodeon in the 90s. It was aired at strange times and I remember gobbling up every opportunity to watch it when I could when I was young. I recall that even then I realized that it had something that many American comic cartoons lacked—the average Joe hero. Each new story, the good natured reporter got swept up in grandiose adventures involving everything from ancient artifacts, to exotic locations around the world, to menacing villains. And Tin Tin dealt with all of these escapades without any powers or special abilities. Sound a little familiar? Those last sentences could probably be used to describe Indiana Jones, which Tin Tin has often been compared to!

With Steven Spielberg directing, Peter Jackson producing, music by the legendary John Williams and an all star cast of voice acting including Daniel Craig (James Bond: Quantum of a Solace, Cowboys and Aliens), Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings), this movie is shaping up to be THE movie to see this holiday season. If you haven’t checked out the trailer yet, you can check it out here!
