Booster Gold Coming to Syfy?

Booster Gold, the handsome time-traveler from the DC universe, is in development for a TV series on SyFy. The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that SyFy has ordered a one-hour script based on the character, most likely for a pilot to explore the possibility of an ongoing series.

Michael John Carter was born in Gotham City in the 25th century, and went back in time to the (then) 20th century to use his future acquired knowledge for highly-publicized heroic feats and to be recognized as a superhero instead of the washed up sports star that he was in his own time.

Booster was featured on the long-running series Smallville where he was portrayed by Eric Martsolf. It’s unclear whether or not SyFy is using that Smallville appearance as a starting point for this latest show.

I don’t have much opinion about this either way, simply because I’m not that familiar with the character outside of the occasional plastic appearance in the toy aisles. I never watched Smallville, either, so I can’t even say whether or not superheroes work on television, besides the timeless Batman: The Animated Series. Although, in full disclosure, I watched Heroes on NBC and thought it did everything well initially and then started is at first slow decline and then transitioned into a full on head-first dive into a pool of garbage.

This Booster series got me thinking, though. What other super heroes could work on a low to mid-budget television series?

Before the WB greenlit Smallville, they explored a young Bruce Wayne growing up in Gotham. Could a young or “Year One” Batman series work? Green Lantern? And we can’t forget about the Marvel Universe; Spider-man, Fantastic Four, or hell, why couldn’t Doctor Strange have his own show?

Now, my dream would be a serious-minded, X-files style B.P.R.D. show on a respected adult network like HBO, but that probably won’t ever happen, but hey MIgnola, if you’re reading this, make it happen.

So, what do you think? Please leave us a comment in the comment section below and tell us what superhero/comic series you’d like to see on the small screen!
