Comic Book Movies Coming in 2012

Posted on January 06, 2012 at 1:30 PM Batman | Captain America | Comic Book Movies | Comic Book News | Iron Man | Spider-man | Thor

2012 is looking to be one of the most promising movie years ever, at least where geeks and comic-book nerds are concerned. Starting as soon as next month with Ghost Rider, it just gets better and better with some huge blockbusters hitting this summer. Without further ado, these are five films you’ll want to mark on your freshly unwrapped calendars this Halloween.

What? Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (3D)

Who? Ghost Rider, the only flaming skull biker in the Marvel Universe that is sometimes played by Nicolas Cage.

When? February 17th

Why? It’s more Nicolas Cage wackiness, so why not? Also, it’s February, it’s cold and miserable out there, comfort yourself in a warm darkened theater with a nice big bucket of popcorn.

What? John Carter (3D)

Who? John Carter of Mars fought in the American Civil War, though he’s actually a Martian and is summoned back to Barsoom (Mars) to a land riddled with fantastic creatures and bodacious babes.

When? March 9th

Why? These Disney blockbusters are always a lot of fun, and in case you didn’t know, Marvel is doing a comic series right this moment based in the John Carter universe!

What? The Avengers (3D)

Who? Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Thor all come together to form the legendary fighting force known as the Avengers.

When? May 4th

Why? Marvel’s master plan finally coagulates in The Avengers, as they’ve been doing solo films for years. No doubt this will be a huge money maker, possibly even the biggest of the year. Mark Ruffalo recently said in an interview that the film is an allegory, so that makes it elevated material! Get your high culture fix at the movies this summer with this fun flick.

What? The Amazing Spider-Man (3D)

Who? Spider-Man gets a reboot from Sony with Andrew Garfield replacing Tobey Maguire in the lead role.

When? July 3rd

Why? Any good geek can admit that Spider-Man 3 wasn’t very good, if not terrible. So, a reboot is exactly what the franchise needed. The costume looks good, the mechanical web shooters look fantastic, and the villain is the Lizard. This might rival the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man, and I never thought I’d say that.

What? The Dark Knight Rises

Who? Batman, Catwoman, Bane, and that’s all we know. Christopher Nolan has somehow kept all the secrets from leaking off set, and while there are rumors of tons of cameos such as Nightwing, Batgirl / Barbara Gordon / Oracle, and even the Riddler.

When? July 20th

Why? This is my prediction for biggest movie of the year, and most definitely the summer. We know so little about the film that it is enough to peak my curiosity, but of course, I’m in the demographic and I’d be seeing this no matter what. I love Nolan’s take on the Batman universe, and I can’t wait to see if he is going to push the envelope with Batman and Bane, possibly ending the series with Batman’s broken back. Who knows at this point, as all those secrets are locked up tight somewhere. Either way, I can’t wait for this film, and I’ll be there opening night at midnight, if possible.
