DC Rebranding Continues with New Logo

DC Entertainment slowly peeled away the veneer today and finally revealed their new logo. The design website Fast Company unveiled the logo that is set to launch this March, starting with the graphic novels and comic books, and then on to DC’s other forms of media. This newly designed logo has been in development for nearly a year, attempting to help solidify the brand in consumer’s minds across all their different independent properties and mediums.

“We didn’t want a static logo, but a living identity that could capture the power of our characters and storytelling,” says Amit Desai, senior vice president of franchise management. “What is special about DC content is the notion of a dual identity. When you think about our DC Comics superheroes, there’s a secret identity. When you think about Vertigo, it’s this notion of good vs. evil in many of the stories. And so, in addition to flexibility, the new logo communicates this idea of dual identity: There’s more than meets the eye. You have to take a closer look to understand the richness of our characters and stories.”

The logo features a thin, “D” that has fallen back to reveal the “C” beneath. The “C” is then themed to individual characters or properties, such as Green Lantern, Batman, and Watchmen. The new logo is certainly versatile and clever, and tailor-made for digital devices with touch screen ability. This logo will be interactive, allowing users to peel back the “D” application to reveal themed, three-dimensional letter beneath.

When the logo was leaked earlier this week fan reaction was mostly negative. That reaction may represent a vocal minority as DC assures that the new design was vetted through numerous focus groups, which rated this final version the best. You can be sure that all these efforts are being made to create new consumers, rather than appease the ones they already have, and have had for years.

It is interesting to note that this comes relatively soon after the whole relaunch of the DC Universe, which was done in the attempt to not only rebrand but re-introduce these classic DC characters to new and old fans alike, simplifying the origin stories and securing general cohesion across all their comic lines. This rebranding has been seen as successful in artistry, marketing, and on a monetary level as well.

So, what do you think of this logo? Is it too corporate, or does it accurately represent the DC brand of today?
