Noah Lewis "Ned" Pines, born December 10, 1905, was an American publisher who oversaw a significant slice of mid-century popular fiction. Active from at least 1928 until 1971, he began in pulp magazines before moving into comic books under his Standard Comics umbrella. Through imprints like Nedor Publishing and Better Publications, Pines’s company introduced the Black Terror, one of the more durable superheroes of the Golden Age. He also founded the paperback house Popular Library, which later merged with Fawcett Publications. Though primarily a businessman, Pines is credited as a writer on ten comic-book issues, mostly for *Thrilling Comics* between 1940 and 1941. His editorial hand shaped a stable of characters and titles that remain of interest to collectors and historians. Pines died on May 14, 1990.
