Andrew Helfer (born August 17, 1958) is an American comic book writer and editor best known for founding DC Comics' Paradox Press imprint, which specialized in mature, non-superhero graphic novels. He began his career in the mid-1980s, writing for DC titles like *Batman: Journey into Knight*, *Deadman*, and *Justice, Inc.*, as well as work on *Judge Dredd* and *Robotech Defenders*. As an editor, Helfer oversaw the acclaimed *Batman: The Animated Series* tie-in comics and helped launch the *Batman: Black & White* anthology. His most notable co-creation is the character Hitman (Tommy Monaghan), created with artist John McCrea for the *Batman: Shadow of the Bat* annual, which later spun into its own series. Helfer's writing is characterized by a gritty, character-driven approach, often blending crime noir with superhero elements. He was active in the industry from 1985 to 2006, with his later work including the *Batman Album* series. Helfer's legacy includes shaping DC's mature-reader line through Paradox Press, which published works like *Road to Perdition*. He has received no major awards, but his editorial and writing contributions remain respected for their influence on darker, more literary comic storytelling.
