Astrid Anna Emilia Lindgren was born on 14 November 1907 in Vimmerby, Sweden, and died on 28 January 2002 in Stockholm. She is best known as the creator of Pippi Longstocking, the freckled, super-strong girl who lives without grown-ups, as well as the Emil of Lönneberga, Karlsson-on-the-Roof, and The Six Bullerby Children series. Lindgren began her career as a secretary and stenographer before winning a children’s book contest in 1944 with *The Confidences of Britt-Mari*. She went on to write over thirty books for children, including the fantasy novels *Mio, My Son*, *The Brothers Lionheart*, and *Ronia the Robber’s Daughter*. Lindgren also worked on the Children’s Literature Editorial Board at the Rabén & Sjögren publishing house in Stockholm. Her stories have been translated into more than 100 languages, making her the 18th most translated author in the world as of 2017, with roughly 167 million books sold by 2010. In 1994, she received the Right Livelihood Award for her authorship dedicated to children’s rights and respect for their individuality. Her later activism for animal welfare led to the passage of a Swedish law nicknamed *Lex Lindgren*. In comics, she is credited as a writer on 16 issues, with her most-credited titles including *Skippern* and collections of Pippi stories.
