Barry Daniels
Barry Daniels (1933–2010) was a British artist, painter, and designer best known for his elegant, narrative-driven comic adaptations of opera. Born in 1933, he came to comics later in life, collaborating extensively with P. Craig Russell on a series of opera adaptations that brought classic works like *Ariane & Bluebeard* and *Night Music* to the page. Daniels served as writer on ten issues between 1985 and 2004, with his most credited titles including *The P. Craig Russell Library of Opera Adaptations* and *Opera*. His work is distinguished by a painterly sensibility and a deep respect for the source material, blending lyrical dialogue with Russell’s lush, decorative art. Together, they co-created a niche but influential body of work that introduced comic readers to the dramatic and musical complexities of opera. Daniels’ later years saw him continue to contribute to the medium, though his output remained focused on this singular collaboration. He passed away in 2010, leaving a legacy as a thoughtful adapter who helped bridge the worlds of classical music and sequential art. His contributions have been recognized within the industry for their artistry and fidelity, though he never sought the spotlight.
