Beau Smith was born on December 17, 1954, in Huntington, West Virginia. An American comic book writer and columnist, he is best known for his work at DC Comics, Image Comics, and IDW Publishing, as well as serving as vice president of marketing for Eclipse Comics. Smith entered the industry in the late 1980s, with his first credited writing appearing in 1989. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he became closely associated with DC's *Guy Gardner: Warrior* series, and collaborated frequently with artist Tom Mandrake. He also co-created the character Boof, and wrote the miniseries *Catwoman / Wildcat* and *Batman / Wildcat*. Smith's writing often blended superhero action with a gritty, blue-collar sensibility, and he maintained a steady presence in the field through the 1990s and 2000s. Later in his career, he wrote for IDW's *Undertaker* and contributed to the *Boof and the Bruise Crew* series. He remained active into the 2020s, with his last credited work appearing in 2025. Smith's legacy is that of a versatile writer and industry veteran who helped shape the marketing side of comics while producing a substantial body of work.
