Bertil Almqvist
1902–1972
Bertil Almqvist, born Allan Bertil Almqvist on 29 August 1902 in Sweden, was a writer and illustrator best known for his enduring children's book series *Barna Hedenhös* (The Stone Age Kids), which later expanded into comic form. He also created the iconic World War II-era propaganda poster *En svensk tiger*, one of the most recognized symbols in Sweden during that period. Almqvist studied literature in Stockholm and Uppsala from 1924 to 1925 before entering the field. His signature style combined playful, educational storytelling with lively, accessible artwork, often collaborating with Swedish publishers to bring prehistoric adventures to young readers. The *Barna Hedenhös* series, including titles such as *The Stone Age Kids Discover America* and *The Stones Explore Britain*, became his most notable co-creation, later adapted into comics that appeared in collections like *Barnens stora julkalender* and *Barna Hedenhös dubbelalbum*. Almqvist, nicknamed Bertila and Trallgöken, worked steadily from the late 1940s through the 1960s, with his credits spanning 20 issues. He died on 16 May 1972. Though major awards are not recorded in his bibliography, his influence on Swedish children's literature and wartime visual culture remains significant.
