Bil Keane, born William Aloysius Keane on October 5, 1922, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was the creator of the beloved syndicated newspaper strip *The Family Circus*. He passed away on November 8, 2011. Keane’s path into comics began early; after high school, he worked as an office boy at the Philadelphia Bulletin and later served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, drawing for the military newspaper *Pacific Stars and Stripes*. His most famous work, *The Family Circus*, debuted in 1960, offering a gentle, single-panel look at suburban family life through the eyes of young Billy, Dolly, Jeff, and PJ. The strip’s signature round, open linework and warm, relatable humor made it a fixture in newspapers for decades. Keane collaborated closely with his son Jeff, who began assisting in the 1970s and took over the strip after Bil’s death. He also produced numerous *Family Circus* collections and the occasional humor book. Keane’s contributions earned him the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award for Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year in 1982. His legacy is one of quiet, consistent charm; *The Family Circus* remains a staple of American comics pages, a testament to Keane’s ability to find gentle comedy in everyday moments.
