Bob Gustafson
1920–2001
Bob Gustafson was an American cartoonist best known for his decades-long work on the *Beetle Bailey* comic books and his earlier run on the newspaper strip *Tillie the Toiler*. Born Robert Dana Gustafson on August 8, 1920, he began his comics career in the 1940s, contributing to titles like *Blondie*, *Freddy*, and *The Bostonian*. His most sustained achievement came with *Beetle Bailey*, where he served as artist, inker, and writer for a 27-year stretch, producing work that appeared in collections such as *Beetle Bailey in the Soup* and the *King Reading Library*. Gustafson’s style was clean and expressive, well-suited to the gag-driven humor of the strip. He collaborated closely with creator Mort Walker, helping maintain the series’ consistent visual tone across its many comic book adaptations. Gustafson passed away on November 28, 2001, at age 81. While he did not receive major industry awards, his steady, reliable craftsmanship across nearly three decades on a flagship property earned him respect among peers and readers. His career, spanning from 1943 to 1994, reflects a journeyman’s dedication to the craft of comic art.
