Byron Preiss was an American writer, editor, and publisher best known as a pioneer in graphic novels, illustrated books, and digital publishing. Born on April 11, 1953, he entered comics in the early 1970s, contributing to *National Lampoon* and *Heavy Metal* while building a reputation for adapting literary science fiction into visual formats. In 1974, he founded Byron Preiss Visual Publications, a company that specialized in merging prose with comics, producing works like *The Illustrated Roger Zelazny* and *The Complete Alfred Bester's The Stars My Destination*. Preiss also co-created *Empire*, a graphic novel series, and *Robin 3000*, a futuristic Batman spin-off. A restless innovator, he embraced emerging technologies early, becoming a recognized leader in CD-ROM books and ebooks through his later imprint, ibooks Inc. Preiss collaborated frequently with writers such as Roger Zelazny and Alfred Bester, and artists like Ralph Reese and John Buscema. He died on July 9, 2005, leaving a legacy as a bridge between traditional publishing and digital media. His work earned him a reputation for expanding the boundaries of how stories could be told, though formal awards were not a defining feature of his career.
