Charles Ardai is an American businessman and author best known as the co-founder and editor of Hard Case Crime, a line of pulp-style paperback crime novels that revived the look and feel of mid-century paperback originals. Born in 1969, he began his career in finance as an early employee and managing director of D. E. Shaw & Co., later serving as chairman of Schrödinger, Inc. His path into comics came through Hard Case Crime, which he launched in 2004, and he soon began writing his own crime stories for the imprint. Ardai’s signature work in comics includes the *Gun Honey* series (with artist Ang Hor Kheng), *The Assignment*, *Minky Woodcock: The Girl Who Electrified Tesla*, and *Breakneck*. He is credited as writer on 18 issues from 2007 to 2026, with *Gun Honey: Blood for Blood* and *Triggerman* among his most-credited titles. His style is lean and hardboiled, steeped in classic noir conventions but with a modern sensibility. Ardai has collaborated frequently with artists like Ang Hor Kheng and Eduardo Barreto. He has received multiple awards for his publishing and writing, including the Edgar Award for his work in crime fiction. His legacy includes not only his own stories but also the revival of pulp crime fiction for a new generation of readers.
