Chris Browne
1952–2023
Chris Browne was an American cartoonist best known for writing and drawing the long-running newspaper strip *Hägar the Horrible* for over three decades. He was born Christopher Kelly Browne on May 16, 1952, and passed away on February 5, 2023. The son of celebrated cartoonist Dik Browne and brother of cartoonist Chance Browne, Chris grew up immersed in comics. He took over *Hägar the Horrible* from his father in 1989, continuing the strip's humorous Viking adventures for King Features Syndicate until his death. Browne’s career in comics stretched back to the 1970s, with credits as an artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 23 issues from 1975 to 2015. Beyond *Hägar*, his work appeared in *National Lampoon Magazine*, *Underdog* comics, and European collections like *Hägar Gesamtausgabe* and *Hårek julehefte*. His style remained faithful to the bold, expressive linework his father established, blending slapstick with family dynamics. Browne’s legacy lies in sustaining a beloved strip for a new generation, earning him a lasting place in syndicated cartooning.
