Dan De Carlo
Dan DeCarlo was the artist who gave Archie and his friends their definitive, cheerful look for decades. Born Daniel S. DeCarlo on December 12, 1919, he modernized the Riverdale gang in the late 1950s and early 1960s, establishing the clean, lively house style that defined Archie Comics until his death on December 18, 2001. He is widely recognized as the co-creator of several major characters, including Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats (the title character was named after his wife), and Cheryl Blossom. DeCarlo’s work was marked by a warm, expressive line and a gift for capturing teenage energy and fashion. He frequently collaborated with writers like Frank Doyle and George Gladir. His signature style is most visible in titles such as *Archie's TV Laugh-Out*, *Betty's Diary*, and *Betty and Veronica Comics Digest Magazine*, as well as his earlier work on *My Friend Irma* and *Adventures of the Big Boy*. While he never received a major industry award like the Eisner or Harvey, his influence on the visual identity of Archie Comics is immeasurable, and his character designs remain the template for the franchise to this day.
