Dash Shaw was born on April 6, 1983, in the United States. He is a cartoonist, writer, and animator best known for emotionally resonant graphic novels that emphasize lyrical logic and unconventional page design. Shaw first gained notice at age 19, when the Small Press Expo named him one of the top ten artists to watch in 2002.

His early work includes the square-sized short-story collection *GoddessHead* (2005) and the graphic novel *Bottomless Belly Button*, published by Fantagraphics. He has also written *BodyWorld* for Pantheon Books, *Love Eats Brains* for Odd God Press, and *The Mother’s Mouth* for Alternative Comics, among others. Shaw’s comics often feature innovative layouts and a focus on emotional, dreamlike storytelling. He has collaborated with artists and writers on short films and performs in the band Love Eats Brains! with James Blanca.

Shaw expanded into animation as the director of the feature films *My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea* (2016) and *Cryptozoo* (2021). His catalog of credited work as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer spans 19 issues from 2008 to 2020, including titles such as *Clue: Candlestick*, *Cosplayers*, *Doctors*, and *New School*. His graphic novels have been translated and published internationally, and he continues to be recognized for his singular visual style and narrative approach.
