Dave Thorpe
Dave Thorpe (born 1954, died April 2024) was a British writer best known for his work on *Captain Britain*. He entered comics in the early 1980s, contributing to the Marvel UK line during a period of creative experimentation. Thorpe’s most significant run came on *Captain Britain*, where he co-created the character of Saturnyne, the ruler of the Omniversal Majestrix, alongside artist Alan Davis. His writing for the series, which appeared in titles such as *Marvel Super-Heroes* and *X-Men Archives Featuring Captain Britain*, was marked by a dense, mythic sensibility that blended cosmic fantasy with sharp political undercurrents. Thorpe’s tenure on the character was brief but influential, setting the stage for later developments by other writers. After leaving mainstream comics, he largely withdrew from the industry, though he returned for occasional projects, including a 2020 story in *True Believers: X-Men - Saturnyne*. His work on *Captain Britain* remains a touchstone for fans of the character, and his collaborations with Davis are often cited as a high point of the series. Thorpe’s legacy is that of a writer who brought a distinctive, cerebral voice to superhero storytelling, even if his output was relatively small.
