David Wenzel
1950–
David Wenzel was born on November 22, 1950, and is best known as the illustrator of the graphic novel adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s *The Hobbit*. He entered the comics field in the mid-1970s, working as an artist, colorist, inker, and writer across more than three dozen issues through 2025. His early credits include work on *The Avengers* and *Planet of the Apes*, as well as *A Espada Selvagem de Conan*, but his most celebrated project remains the 1989 *Hobbit* graphic novel, which he later revisited for a revised and expanded edition. Wenzel’s style blends detailed, atmospheric linework with a warm, storybook sensibility, making him a natural fit for fantasy and children’s book illustration. Beyond comics, he built a career as a children’s book artist, though his Tolkien adaptation remains his signature achievement. His collaborators have included writers and editors across Marvel and independent publishers, though he is primarily recognized as a solo visual storyteller. Wenzel’s adaptation of *The Hobbit* is widely credited with introducing a new generation to Middle-earth and has earned a lasting place in graphic novel history. He has not received major industry awards, but his work is respected for its fidelity to Tolkien’s vision and its accessible, inviting art.
