Doug Wheatley
1950–
Doug Wheatley, also credited as Douglas H. Wheatley or Doug Tropea-Wheatley, is a Canadian comic book artist best known for his detailed, atmospheric work on *Star Wars* and *How to Train Your Dragon* titles for Dark Horse Comics. Born in 1950, he entered the industry in the early 1990s and quickly established a reputation for meticulous linework and a cinematic sense of composition. Over a career spanning nearly three decades—from 1992 to 2020—Wheatley contributed to over three dozen issues, with his most prolific credits including *King Tiger*, *Star Wars: Empire*, *Conan*, *Space Patrol*, and *Star Wars: Republic*. He also illustrated George R. R. Martin’s *Fire & Blood*, bringing the Targaryen saga to vivid life. Wheatley’s style, marked by dense cross-hatching and a gritty realism, made him a natural fit for both sci-fi and fantasy epics. He collaborated frequently with writers like Ron Marz and John Ostrander. Among his notable co-creations are the *Star Wars: Empire* series and the *Space Patrol* miniseries. Wheatley’s work earned him a devoted following among genre fans, though major industry awards remained elusive. He continued to work steadily into the 2010s, leaving behind a body of work that remains a touchstone for fans of detailed, narrative-driven comic art.
