Ed Barreto
Eduardo Barreto was a Uruguayan comic artist best known for his clean, expressive linework across decades of work for DC Comics. Born Luis Eduardo Barreto Ferreyra on March 1, 1954, in Uruguay, he began his professional career in the late 1970s, contributing to European and South American publications before breaking into the American market. His most prominent work for DC included runs on *Detective Comics*, *Supergirl*, and *Atari Force*, where his detailed storytelling and dynamic figure work earned steady acclaim. Barreto also contributed to Marvel, notably on *Captain America* and the *Marvel Knights* line, and was a key artist on the *Man-Bat* limited series. He frequently collaborated with writers such as Gerry Conway and Mike W. Barr, and his three children—Diego, Andrea, and Guillermo—all became artists, occasionally working alongside him. Barreto passed away on December 15, 2011, in Uruguay. His legacy endures through his disciplined craftsmanship and the influence he had on his family’s artistic careers, with his work remaining a touchstone for fans of Bronze Age and modern mainstream comics.
