Elizabeth Hand (born March 29, 1957) is an American writer best known for her literary science fiction and fantasy novels, though she made a notable, compact mark on mainstream comics in the early 1990s. Over a two-year period from 1993 to 1995, she wrote 16 issues, primarily for DC Comics. Her most credited work appears on *Anima* and *The New Titans Annual*, where she brought a distinctive, atmospheric sensibility to superhero storytelling. Hand’s prose background—she had already published acclaimed novels like *Winterlong*—informed her comic scripts, which often emphasized character interiority and mood over action. She collaborated with artists such as Peter Gross on *Anima*, a short-lived series exploring psychic powers and corporate conspiracy. Though her comics output was brief, it stands as a curious bridge between her literary career and the medium. She co-created the character Anima (Courtney Mason) with Gross. After leaving comics, Hand returned to novels, winning multiple World Fantasy Awards and the Shirley Jackson Award for her dark, lyrical fiction. Her legacy includes being a rare novelist to cross into superhero comics during the 1990s, bringing a literary voice to a genre often dominated by career comic writers.
