Enki Bilal (born Enes Bilal on 7 October 1951) is a French comic book creator and film director. Born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), he moved to France as a child and began his career in the early 1970s, contributing to the legendary magazine *Pilote*. Over a five-decade span (1975–2025), he has been credited as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 139 issues, with his most prominent works including *Bug*, *Exterminator 17*, and the *Alexander Nikopol* cycle. Bilal is best known for his distinctive, painterly style—a blend of photorealistic figures, stark shadows, and muted, often dystopian color palettes—and for his long collaboration with writer Pierre Christin on early projects. His signature creation, the *Nikopol* trilogy (which includes *The Carnival of Immortals*), established him as a master of political and metaphysical science fiction. Later, he adapted his own comics into films, directing *Immortal* (2004). Bilal’s work has been widely honored, including a Grand Prix at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. He remains active, with his most recent series, *Bug*, continuing into the 2020s, and his legacy as a singular voice in European comics is secure.
