Ewins
Brett Ewins (1955–2015) was a British comic book artist best known for his dynamic, punk-infused work on the anthology *2000 AD*. Born in 1955, he broke into the industry in the late 1970s and quickly became a defining visual voice for the magazine’s early years. His most celebrated contributions include the epic *Judge Caligula* storyline, where his jagged, expressive linework and bold storytelling captured the grotesque excess of Judge Dredd’s most unhinged antagonist. Ewins often collaborated with writer John Wagner and inker/artist Brendan McCarthy, with whom he co-created the surreal, psychedelic series *The Adventures of Luther Arkwright* for *2000 AD*’s sister title *Starlord*. His style—raw, energetic, and steeped in the aesthetics of British subculture—stood apart from the more polished house style of the era. After his peak in the 1980s, Ewins worked sporadically, with his last credited comic work appearing in 2008. He died in 2015. While he never received major industry awards, his influence on British comics is enduring, particularly through his role in shaping the anarchic tone of *2000 AD* and inspiring later generations of artists.
