Gafford
Carl Gafford is best known as a colorist for Marvel Comics during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Born in 1953 in the United States, he entered the comics industry at a time when color was transitioning from hand-painted separations to the early digital processes. Gafford’s work is most frequently associated with *Fantastic Four*, *Spider-Woman*, *The Fury of Firestorm*, *The Savage She-Hulk*, and *The Avengers*, where his palette helped define the look of these superhero titles. He was active from 1979 to 1984, a period that saw him contribute to 11 credited issues. While he did not create characters or storylines, his role as a colorist was essential in giving visual life to the work of artists and writers. Gafford collaborated with editors and creators who were shaping Marvel’s second wave of heroes, including the introduction of She-Hulk and the solo adventures of Spider-Woman. After his brief but focused career in comics, he largely stepped away from the industry. Details of his later life are not widely recorded, and he did not receive major awards for his coloring work. Nevertheless, his contributions remain a footnote in the history of Bronze Age Marvel coloring.
