As the Kid Goes for Broke (A Doonesbury Book) #[nn] (1977)
Garry Trudeau, born Garretson Beekman Trudeau on July 21, 1948, in New York City, is the American cartoonist behind the long-running newspaper strip *Doonesbury*. He first gained attention while at Yale University, where his early strip *Bull Tales* debuted in the student newspaper. After graduation, the strip was picked up for syndication and renamed *Doonesbury*, quickly becoming a cultural touchstone for its sharp political satire and character-driven storytelling. In 1975, Trudeau became the first comic strip artist to win the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, an honor he shares only with Berkeley Breathed, who has cited Trudeau as an influence. His work is defined by a deceptively simple, clean line style and a dense, witty script that tackles everything from the Vietnam War to modern political scandals. Beyond the strip, Trudeau created and executive produced the Amazon Studios series *Alpha House*. His catalog includes numerous collected editions such as *Adjectives Will Cost You Extra* and *Buck Wild Doonesbury*, and he has collaborated with characters that cross over into other strips, including *Calvin and Hobbes*. Trudeau remains active, with *Doonesbury* continuing to run in newspapers and online, cementing his legacy as a pioneering voice in editorial cartooning.
