Gerard Way
b. 1977
Gerard Arthur Way was born on April 9, 1977, in Newark, New Jersey. While best known worldwide as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock band My Chemical Romance, Way has built a parallel career as a comic book writer. He made his comics debut in 2007 with *The Umbrella Academy*, a series he co-created with artist Gabriel Bá. The darkly whimsical superhero saga, about a dysfunctional family of adopted child superheroes, became a cult hit and was later adapted into a popular Netflix series that ran for four seasons. Way also co-created *The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys*, a post-apocalyptic story that expanded on the world of a My Chemical Romance album. In 2016, he founded DC Comics' Young Animal imprint, a line of offbeat, mature-reader titles, and wrote its flagship series, *Doom Patrol*. His writing credits also include *Cave Carson Has a Cybernetic Eye* and *Paranoid Gardens*. Way's work is marked by a love of surrealism, emotional vulnerability, and found-family dynamics. He remains an active, respected voice in comics, with his most credited work spanning from 2007 to 2024.
