Grant E. Hamilton, born on August 16, 1862, in the United States, was a political cartoonist whose sharp, satirical work defined late 19th- and early 20th-century American humor magazines. He is best known for his long tenure at *Judge*, where he served as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 59 issues from 1884 until 1918. His signature style blended bold linework with a keen eye for caricature, often targeting political figures and social trends of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Hamilton’s cartoons were widely reprinted, and he collaborated regularly with the magazine’s editors and fellow humorists, though his most enduring partnership was with the publication itself. Among his notable co-creations are the iconic character "The Yellow Kid" (often misattributed to others) and the enduring symbol of the Republican elephant, which he popularized in an 1874 cartoon for *Harper’s Weekly*. After his active career, Hamilton’s influence waned as newspaper comics evolved, but his work remains a touchstone for political cartooning. He died on April 17, 1926. While he did not receive major formal awards in his lifetime, his contributions are recognized in the history of American cartooning.
