Grass Green
1939–2002
Richard Edward "Grass" Green was born on May 7, 1939, and passed away on August 5, 2002. He is recognized as the first Black cartoonist to participate in both the 1960s fan art movement and the 1970s underground comics scene. Green entered comics through fanzines, where his energetic, action-filled parodies—reminiscent of Harvey Kurtzman’s style—gained notice. In the underground era, his work turned sharply satirical, using biting humor to confront American racism and bigotry. He is best known for his contributions to titles such as *Horny Stories and Comix*, *Sinnin'*, *Go-Go*, and *Ghetto Bitch*, and he also worked with *Comics Buyer's Guide* and *Charlton Premiere*. Over a career spanning from 1967 to 2002, Green served as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across 23 cataloged issues. His legacy endures as a pioneering voice who expanded the boundaries of independent comics, though major awards were not recorded in his lifetime.
