Héctor Germán Oesterheld (23 July 1919 – disappeared 1977) is revered as a foundational figure in modern Argentine comics. Born in Buenos Aires, he initially worked as a journalist and editor before turning to graphic storytelling. Under the byline HGO, he wrote for *Hora Cero Suplemento Semanal*, where his most famous creation, *El Eternauta*, appeared. Drawn by Francisco Solano López, this science-fiction epic used an alien invasion as a metaphor for totalitarianism, reflecting Oesterheld’s growing anti-imperialist convictions. His work grew more explicitly political after Che Guevara’s 1967 execution; he wrote a biographical comic about Guevara that the military dictatorship banned and destroyed. Oesterheld and his daughters later joined the Montoneros guerrilla group. After the 1976 coup, he continued publishing clandestinely until he was kidnapped and disappeared in 1977, along with his daughters and sons-in-law. His wife, Elsa Sánchez de Oesterheld, survived. With democracy’s return, Oesterheld’s influence became vast, shaping generations of Argentine writers and cartoonists. He is now honored as a master of the medium and a symbol of resistance, with his work frequently studied for its narrative depth and moral urgency.
