Ivan Brunetti
b. 1967
Ivan Brunetti, born on October 3, 1967, is an Italian-American cartoonist and comics scholar based in Chicago. He is best known for his darkly humorous and psychologically raw work, particularly the series *Schizo*, which he wrote, drew, and lettered. Brunetti’s path into comics began with a deep love for underground and alternative strips, leading him to self-publish his early efforts before contributing to anthologies like *Biff Bang Pow!* and *Haw!*. His style is marked by a deceptively simple, almost crude linework that belies a sharp, often uncomfortable wit, and he frequently collaborated with like-minded artists in the alternative-comics scene. Notable co-creations include the collection *The Morally Questionable Cartoons of Ivan Brunetti* and the anthology *MegaPyton*. Later in life, Brunetti shifted toward academia, editing influential textbooks such as *An Anthology of Graphic Fiction, Cartoons, and True Stories*, which cemented his legacy as both a practitioner and a scholar of the medium. He received the Inkpot Award for his contributions to comics. Brunetti’s work continues to influence cartoonists who value emotional honesty and formal experimentation.
