James Shooter
James Shooter was a polarizing but undeniably influential figure in American comics, best known for his tenure as Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief and for founding multiple publishing houses. Born James Charles Shooter on September 27, 1951, he began his career remarkably early, writing for DC Comics at age 14. He later joined Marvel, where his editorial leadership was both successful and controversial, shaping the company's direction during a key period. Shooter is credited as a writer and colorist on titles including *The Avengers*, *Dazzler: The Movie*, and *Marvel Super-Heroes*. His most significant co-creation is the character of the Beyonder, introduced in the landmark *Secret Wars* miniseries. After leaving Marvel, he launched Valiant Comics, followed by Defiant and Broadway Comics, each a distinct attempt to build a new publisher. Shooter's later years were marked by ongoing legal and creative disputes over his contributions. He passed away on June 30, 2025. His legacy remains that of a driven, contentious architect who left an indelible mark on the industry's business and storytelling.
