Jeff MacNelly
1947–2000
Jeff MacNelly was an American editorial cartoonist and the creator of the beloved comic strip *Shoe*, which he launched in 1977. Born Jeffrey Kenneth MacNelly on September 17, 1947, in New York City, he grew up with a sharp eye for satire. He began his career in editorial cartooning, winning the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1978 for his work at the *Richmond News Leader*. His draftsmanship and keen sense of the absurd placed him at the forefront of a new generation of cartoonists. After *Shoe* became a fixture in newspapers, MacNelly introduced the single-panel strip *Pluggers*. He collaborated with writers and editors to produce several collections, including *A Shoe for All Seasons* and *New Shoes*. His work appeared in *National Geographic World* and *Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year*. MacNelly passed away on June 8, 2000, in Baltimore, Maryland, at the age of 52. His legacy endures through the continued syndication of *Shoe* and his influence on both political cartooning and comic strips.
