John Barrowman was born on 11 March 1967 in Glasgow, Scotland, and moved with his family to Illinois at age eight. While best known to general audiences as an actor—particularly as Captain Jack Harkness in *Doctor Who* and its spin-off *Torchwood*, and as Malcolm Merlyn in the Arrowverse—he also contributed to comics as a writer. Encouraged by high school teachers, he studied performing arts at United States International University in San Diego before launching a stage career in London’s West End. His theatrical work earned him a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for Sam Mendes’ production of *The Fix* in 1998. Barrowman’s path into comics grew naturally from his *Torchwood* association; he co-wrote several *Torchwood* comic stories, as well as the miniseries *Arrow: The Dark Archer* and the original series *Acursian*, working with collaborators such as artist Beni R. Lobel. His comic writing credits span 12 issues from 2010 to 2021. In 2006, he was named Stonewall’s Entertainer of the Year. Barrowman also hosted the BBC quiz show *Pressure Pad* and served as a judge on *Dancing on Ice* from 2020 to 2021. His legacy bridges stage, screen, and comics, with his most enduring creation remaining the swashbuckling time agent who introduced a new generation to queer superheroes.
