José Luis García-López was born on March 26, 1948, in Spain, and later became a Spanish-Argentine comics artist best known for his decades-long association with DC Comics. He first gained notice for his clean, expressive storytelling and dynamic figure work, which he brought to a range of DC titles including *Tomahawk*, *Batman*, *Weird Western Tales*, and *Superman*. His most enduring contribution, however, came not from a single story but from his role as the primary artist for the DC Comics Style Guide, where he produced the official reference art for the company’s characters. These precise, iconic depictions became the standard for licensed merchandise, from lunchboxes to cartoons, defining the visual identity of DC’s heroes for a generation. García-López collaborated frequently with writers like Bob Haney and Gerry Conway, and his work on *Batman* and *Superman* in the 1970s and 1980s remains admired for its clarity and grace. He continued to work into the 1990s, with credits on special editions and reprint projects. Though he never sought the spotlight, his style guide art earned him a lasting legacy as the artist who gave DC’s characters their most recognizable, timeless look. He received the Eisner Award for Best Penciller/Inker in 2013, honoring his influence on the industry.
