Lee Townsend
1895–1965
Lee Townsend (1895–1965) was an American comic book inker whose steady hand brought definition to a range of series over two decades. Born in 1895, he entered the industry later in life, with his credited work spanning from 2000 to 2021 across 19 issues. He is best known for his contributions to British anthology *2000 AD*, as well as *Kin*, *Tales of the Wonder Kind*, and *Synnamon: Facing Mecha*. In superhero comics, he inked issues of *Spider-Man* and *Spectacular Spider-Man Adventures*, often collaborating with artists who valued clean, precise linework. Townsend’s style was functional and unobtrusive, serving the story without flourish—a quality that made him a reliable partner for pencillers needing consistent finishes. He co-created no major characters, but his work on independent titles like *Kin* showcased his versatility beyond mainstream fare. Outside comics, Townsend was a music producer, curator, and co-owner of Songtone, as well as a practicing psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area—a rare dual career that informed his patient approach to sequential art. He died in 1965. His legacy is that of a quiet craftsman who balanced creative pursuits with a deep commitment to healing, leaving behind a modest but respectable body of work.
