Luis Royo
Luis Royo, born in 1954 in Spain, is a fantasy artist whose lush, often darkly romantic illustrations have graced magazines, book covers, and video games for decades. He began his professional life as a furniture designer before the work of European comics masters like Enki Bilal and Moebius drew him to the industry. By 1979, he had committed to art full-time. His distinctive style—a blend of meticulous realism, sensual fantasy, and atmospheric, often brooding color—quickly found a home on the covers of *Heavy Metal*, *National Lampoon*, and Spanish magazines like *El Vibora* and *Cimoc*. Royo’s art also appeared on Tarot cards and music albums. While he is primarily known as a painter and illustrator, his comics credits as artist, colorist, or inker span from 1987 to 2008, with notable work in *Penthouse Comix*, *Lanciostory*, and the Swedish *Tung metall*. He has released numerous art books collecting his work, cementing his legacy as a defining voice in late 20th-century fantasy illustration.
